Sangre de Grado, Dragon's Blood (Croton lechleri)

About the plant

Sangre de grado (Croton lechleri) is a tree in the Euphorbiaceae family, up to 25 m tall. When the trunk is damaged it exudes characteristic red latex ('dragon's blood'). Distributed in Amazon rainforests (Mexico, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil). The latex contains alkaloids, phenolics, diterpenes, steroids; research supports antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and wound-healing activity.

Properties and use

Traditionally the latex is used for wounds, burns, hemorrhoids, GI ulcers, diarrhea. The image of 'tree blood' instantly closing and protecting damage makes the plant a symbol of sealing wounds and regeneration. In Shipibo protocols sangre de grado is part of the recovery line after heavy processes — when the body needs protection and regeneration.

Use in dietas

In the dieta context sangre de grado is often used as support and consolidation after other dietas or purgatives — for 'sealing' and restoring tissues and energy. Sometimes dieted separately to deepen connection with the spirit of the protective plant. Guidance by a maestro.

Precautions

Latex at traditional doses for external and internal use is generally well tolerated; in acute dermal toxicity studies at 2000 mg/kg no toxicity was observed. Contraindications are general for dietas; for internal use only as directed by the maestro.
